What am I entitled to?

DISABILITY LIVING ALLOWANCE

You can claim DLA for you child. You will need to show that you child has different needs from regular children. (if you already have a Statement for your child, this is enough proof).

You can fill in the form on line at `www.direct.gov.uk

If you are on higher carer's allowance (see below) you may be eligible for more tax credit.

CORE ASSESSMENT

You need to ring Social Services and ask for a core assessment (not a general assessment). This will involve filling in a form and a visit from social services and may result in you obtaining a monthly payment towards child-care, help in the home etc.

CARER'S ALLOWANCE

This allowance is for carers who can't work because they have to care for /be on call for their child. You will find the form at the address below. It can be back dated 3 months and you will need to reapply every few years. If need be, Mencap ( 020 7454 0454) will help you fill in the form.

FREEDOM PASS

This is a free travel pass for children with a disability. You can obtain the form from the Post Office or access it on line at:

FREE CINEMA CARD

This card allows free entry for one carer when accompanied by paying child (with disability). It costs £5.50 a year.

BARNET DISABLED CHILDRENS REGISTER

If you are a Barnet resident then you can put your child on the Barnet Disabled Children's' Register. You child will receive a card which will enable to prove you child's special needs and help you get assistance, jump queues (at theme parks for example), get reductions etc.

ASSISTANCE AT AIRPORTS

If you are planning to travel by plane you can ring the airline first and explain that your child is autistic and cannot queue. You should be able to get assistance at check in and be allowed on the plane first.

THEATRE TICKETS – SPECIAL NEEDS LINE

All theatres reserve tickets for families with children with a disability. Even if the theatre has sold out of regular tickets, you may be able to get tickets for you and your child. Ask for the Special Needs Line. One ticket is usually free. (You will need proof of your child's disability)

FAMILY FUND

If you are a household earning under £28,000 ayear you can apply for Family Fund to buy things you need for your child. You will be able to list 3 items you need (e.g computer, printer) up to a total of £900 a year.

BARNET SHORT BREAKS

This organisation provides planned short breaks for carers by taking over the caring role in the cared-for person's home. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Carers can use the service for between four and eight hours a week, and for occasional overnight or 48-hour weekend periods.
